After several years of interruption, since 2023 the Funivia Monte Lema SA cable
car is once again organising a free distance paragliding competition called REMAX Cross Country Cup Lema.
In the past editions, held about fifteen years ago, champions of the discipline have always imposed themselves, including Volker Nies, Beni Stocker, Manuele Dondi, Alfredo Studer and Ermanno Pedroncelli, (the latter holds, with a 223 km flight followed by a landing near Innsbruck, the free distance record with take-off from Monte Lema). In 2023, the first edition of the new course was won by the home pilot Claudio Cattaneo, ahead of the Italian Paolo Manfrin and Julian Kaufmann from Lucerne.
Thanks to the support of sponsors, the total prize money is CHF 2500,-.
Participants will be divided into different categories. The organizers thus intend to support and involve all pilots, from experienced competitors to novice pilots and women.
Monte Lema is located in the tourist region of Malcantone, near Lugano. From its panoramic peak you can admire a large part of the Alps and the pre-Alps with lakes Maggiore and Ceresio. The best time for long-distance flights is from March to June, but even between July and September hundreds of kilometers can often be covered.
Access to Monte Lema
At the Lugano Nord exit of the A2 Basel-Chiasso motorway, take the cantonal road in the direction of Ponte Tresa. At the entrance to Caslano, at the roundabout, turn right towards Novaggio and then towards Miglieglia, where the departure station of the Monte Lema cable car is located.
